Getting Help

What can we do about it?

Protecting children from violence is everybody's business -

  • parents
  • step-parents
  • grandparents
  • aunties and uncles
  • friends
  • neighbours
  • workmates
  • teachers
  • health workers

You can make a difference. If you see violence happening around you, take action.

"I heard screaming next door one night. I trusted my gut and called the police." Neighbour, 42

If you know an adult who's being abused, offer them support and encourage them to get help.

If you are living with a partner who's violent, get help - for you and your children.

  • Talk to your children and tell them the violence is not their fault.
  • Help your children understand that it's not their job to protect you
  • Help them find an adult they can talk to
  • Teach your children to ring 111 if they're in danger

If you know someone who's violent, they need to know that it's wrong. Encourage them to get help.

If you're violent, you're harming the people around ypu. You can change, but you may need help.

Lots of people who have been violent have got help and turned their lives around.

Recognise the warning signs.

Learn to do things differently -

  • STOP
  • THINK
  • TALK... OR WALK AWAY

to keep yourself safe and others safe.

Try to do something about the things that make you stressed and unhappy.

If violence was part of your childhood, you don't have to repeat it.

"I used to get really stressed at work. All I wanted to do when I got home was drink and relax like my Dad used to. Then the kids would start winding me up and I'd lose it, just like he did." Father, 32
